Newcomer Health and Well-Being

In recent years, Parkdale has become home to many newcomer individuals and families.  In an attempt to welcome these newcomers and help them to feel accepted in their new home, the Newcomers Health and Well-Being Group works with specific communities to foster a sense of belonging and cultural nourishment. The Newcomer Health and Wellbeing Group is a safe space to discuss health and social issues and how to integrate into Canadian society while also celebrating and enriching one's own cultural practices.

Participants will engage in group discussions, gain knowledge and skills to improve their health and well-being, and learn more about Canadian society.

Previous topics discussed include:

  • How to access resources
  • Income tax clinics
  • How to integrate – your rights, the importance of getting involved
  • Volunteer work
  • Services at Masaryk Cowan Community Recreation Centre
  • What impacts your health, including the determinants of health
  • Self help

This program runs twice yearly and accepts up to twenty participants. This program is provided in partnership with Kababayan Community Centre.
